Hot on the heels of his solo talk at the Institute of Demolition Engineers last month, Malcolm Lowes, Demolition Director, returned to the stage last week – this time joining James Dunlop of Andun Engineering at their Temporary Works & Demolition CPD breakfast – to speak at Nottingham Trent University’s School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (ADBE).
Together, they explored the complexities of dismantling Space Deck Roofs, highlighting key engineering principles, challenges, and constraints through the lens of a recent high-profile project at the Eagles Centre Market in Derby.
The operation involved lifting a 14m x 14m roof section using a 100-tonne crane. It was executed with precision in just three minutes, despite tight site constraints, poor weather conditions and a busy festive footfall. The project’s success was the result of months of meticulous planning, close collaboration, and a “triple-check” approach rooted in caution, adaptability, and decisive leadership.
It was a pleasure to be part of such a successful event, engaging with over 50 local engineers and helping bridge the gap between theory and real-world demolition challenges through practical insight.
This was the second delivery of this session, continuing our commitment to sharing knowledge, showcasing engineering expertise, and supporting the next generation of industry professionals.
